Henry DeLand

Wonder-Eyes and What For

Today we take baking powder for granted, but back in the 1800’s, it was a revolutionary invention that made a fortune for entrepreneurs like Henry DeLand — the founder of our Florida town. Before he became president of the company — which was founded by his brother — DeLand was in charge of marketing. Here’s one of the promotions he devised — a reprint of a children’s book, featuring subtle ads for baking powder on every page. You are invited…

Country Clubbing

Imagine golfing with these fine fellows back in the early 1940s. You’d need knickers and a tweed cap to fit in. If you could pull up in a Chevrolet sedan, so much the better. I’m pretty sure that the flower pots and the flag were added to the card during post-production, but the country club was clearly an impressive setting. Bob Curry visited the club, and then he sent a quick hello back to his pal John Archer Jr in Jefferson…

Minding My Own Business

Licenses and Registration

I stopped by DeLand’s city hall today for a business license. As it turns out, I didn’t have all the documentation I needed. Who does, on their first try? LegalZoom’s checklists can only take you so far. Even so, I was impressed and pleasantly surprised by the people at city hall. There were no lines at the counter — and more importantly, there were no scowling faces, or “tsks,” or sighs of disapproval. The clerks were nice! I usually steel myself…

Someone named Robert sent the postcard to a friend in 1906, with a simple note of greeting. This is a nice man standing in front of this store. His name is F. G. Brill. Brill’s shop was at 113 N. Woodland in DeLand. According to Images of America: Deland: Constructed in 1887,…

How Blogs Have Changed Business

A few years ago, business leaders who wanted to share their vision had just one option: they had to write books. Today, we can blog. You can still write a book, if you want to. But if you want to get the most from business blogging, here are a few key points to keep in mind. Blogs are personal. Your audience wants to know who you are — and who you’re becoming. Over time, you’ll reveal your best self, as…

Create an Editorial Calendar

How to plan your posts a year ahead Business blogging is easier when you have a long-term plan. Create an editorial calendar, and you might find that your plan practically writes itself. First, decide how often you’d like to blog. If you’re a small-business owner, I recommend creating new content once every week or two. Choose every Monday, or every other Wednesday, or any day you like. Just pick a regular publishing date that suits the rest of your schedule.…

The Secret Language of Color

Why does Coca-Cola use so much red? Why is the Facebook logo blue? Psychologists know. Colors represent a rainbow of symbolic significance — and the company colors you’ve chosen for your business can be revealing. Red, the color of wine or blood, symbolizes passion, love, and sex. Some shades of red also serve as a warning: like a stop sign or a siren light, redcan also represent danger, anger, and alarm. Pink, a lighter shade of red, indicates passions that…
